High quality, independent living

The Hull Charterhouse was founded in 1384 by Michael de la Pole. The poet Andrew Marvell, whose father was Master of the Charterhouse in the 17th Century, grew up here.

The Master is always a member of the clergy. There is a Board of Trustees who oversee the maintenance of the property and interview prospective residents. Five of the Trustees are nominated by Hull City Council.

At the heart of the Charterhouse’s Grade 1 listed buildings is an exquisite 18th Century chapel which residents attend on Sundays.

Many of our residents move to the Charterhouse from housing which no longer meets their needs or where they may no longer feel secure or at ease. They may wish to continue to live independently but with a greater measure of shelter.

At the Charterhouse, every resident has his or her own front door and the freedom to come and go at will, but with support on hand when required.
